But Smith DID score! Gordon Smith got the first goal in Brighton's 2-2 draw with Man Utd in 1983, with a header.

No FA Cup Finals of recent years have been particularly famous.

As far as quality matches, the 2006 final was the best final for a long time. There hadn't been a classic in the final since 1990. Which is odd as all the finals in the 1980s were entertaining matches, apart from 1982.

I've watched every FA Cup final since 1984 and the ones that stand out for me are Coventry 3-2 Spurs (1987), Wimbledon 1-0 Liverpool (1988), Liverpool 3-2 Everton (1989), Manchester United 3-3 Crystal Palace (1990), Chelsea 2-0 Middlesbrough (1997), Chelsea 1-0 Aston Villa (2000) and Liverpool 3-3 West Ham (2006). I also remember the Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea (2002) final for the wrong reasons.
Worse still, I attended the 1994 final (scoreline not mentioned, let's just call it the David Elleray Final) and I have tried my very best to blank it out!

The most memorable FA Cup finals for me are:

- 2001; 2-1; Liverpool (Owen 82, 88) vs Arsenal (Ljungberg 73)
- 2002; 2-0; Arsenal (Parlour 70, Ljungberg 80) vs Chelsea
- 2006; 3-3; Liverpool (Cisse 32, Gerrard 54, 90+1') vs West Ham United (Carragher 21 og, Ashton 28, Konchesky 64) and Liverpool won by penalty shoot-out.

Got to admit I loved that Coventry 3-2 win against Spurs in 1987. My mate put a fiver on Coventry winning 3-2 at 66-1 odds. He was larging it all night and spent a load buying rounds. Monday when he went to pick up his winnings, he discovered his bet was over 90 minutes the score then was 2-2, the game was won in extra time!

Liverpool V West Ham, as it was no where near as boring as some of the recent FA Cup finals and Gerrard's goal was pretty good

1979 - Arsenal 2-0 up till five minutes before the end. Then Man U get one back.....it get's nervous.... then Sammy McIlroy gets a second for United. It's 2-2! But there's still 2 minutes of normal time left. Then Graham Rix (I think) releases a Ball to Liam Brady down the left wing, there's no one in the box so Brady waits, and spots Alan Sunderland coming in on the far side of the post - a perfectly weighted cross is met by Alan Sunderland at the far post - and Manchester United - their heads at first down, then up again, are devestated. 3-2 to Arsenal. It doesn't come better than that (Except for beating Liverpool 2-0 on the final day of the league season to deny them the title and win it ourselves).

Liverpool vs West Ham in the 2005 finals. What a great way to determine the winner: penalty shootouts
