A useful thing to remember is that:

60 miles per hour = 88 feet per second.

(This is printed in many Driver's Handbooks, in a section talking about stopping distances.)

So, 5 feet per second is 5/88 x (88 feet per second), or:

(5/88) x (60 mph) = 3.40909... (recurring) mph.

If you don't make use of this useful fact, you have to use separate conversions of miles to feet, and hours to seconds.

There are 5280 feet in a mile (3 feet per yard, 1760 yards per mile), and 3600 seconds in an hour (60 secs per min., 60 mins. per hour).

So, 1 mph = 1 mile/1 hour = 5280 ft./3600 secs. = 88/60 (!) ft./sec. (I didn't simplify it further, to demonstrate that it's the same as the factor implied above; multiplying both sides of the eqn. 1 mph = 88/60 mph, one gets 60 mph = 88 ft. per sec.)

Live long and prosper.
