Haven't had a chance to read any of the New Jedi Order, but I think your overlooking the most important thing... the novels of the expanded universe are unlimited in their nature, just as they build apon the movies, new books will build apon them.

George Lucas (the "God and Creator of Star Wars") can't even contain the wonders of the expanded universe. Many things thought to be definate and "fact" in the Star Wars movies have been blown out of the water by the expanded universe.

According to the movies there were only 30 fighters to take on the Death Star in A New Hope, but the expanded universe introduced Commander Narra that lead a group of reserve fighters to help take on the TIE fighters that attack Red & Gold group.

In Empire Strikes Back only two AT-AT walkers get taken out (one by Wedge and one by Luke), but in the expanded universe a third walker was taken out by Dash Rendar from Shadows of the Empire.

Boba Fett was supposed to have died in Return of the Jedi, but he was brought back (supposedly his Mandalorian armor protected him long enough for him to blast his way out of the Sarlacc's body and dig his way to the surface) in the expanded universe.

Before the prequels, the original trilogy of movies clearly defined the only Jedi to survive the purge were Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, but the expanded universe created other survivors like Vima Daboda and Joruus C'boath.

Even if the books surrounding the Ossus events specifically say ONLY "X" number of Jedi survived, it won't matter because new authors will create new characters and back stories to introduce "other survivors" that were also there at Ossus. If authors can undo the "word of the creator" (George Lucas) they can certainly undo the words of an obscure author that tried to say only "X" number of Jedi survived Ossus.
