I plan to insulate my 2x8 joists with R 22 and use a foil lined vapour barrier. To anyone who has constructed one, would this be adequate for the sauna ceiling or should I fill the entire cavity?

Oh yeah, flooring on main floor is laminate.

The Sauna will have an electric heater, and is not a steam bath. It is a dry heat and will not cause problems with excessive moisture.
Just wondering what others have done and if they experience warm floors above the sauna or not.

Basement Sauna

Without question your project will increase temperatures in the immediate area surrounding the appliance, but increase moisture and humidity as well.

I suspect warmth on the level above will be less an issue than the moisture which will be ever present below.

I suggest options in addition to the "barrier" you plan. Think of the ceiling as you would a bathroom, or shower stall. The backer board most effectively used would be water resistent, and easily installed as an alternate ceiling for the basement. I might even "paint" it with some quality, exterior/interior, epoxy paint.

I also suggest venting of some sort, especially when the appliance is in use, and maybe even a dehumidifier to maintain an environment that's as moisture free as possible.

With no offense meant I disagree with plastic sheet. Moisture will condense "Above" the sheet as well as the underside, trapping it.
