If keeping the covers nice is an issue, first wrap the record in a plastic bag. Tape it shut. Next, cut 2 squares of heavy cardboard that are bigger than the record. Make loops of tape and stick each square to either side of the record. At this point, you can probably tape the squares together to make double-sure they won't shift. The cardboard will protect the record from being bent, and also protect the edges of the cover (again, if the condition is an issue). If you don't have a box that will fit the record, you can probably get away with wrapping it in brown paper and a LOT of tape. Make sure to write, in large letters, "DO NOT BEND" and "FRAGILE" on the outside of the package. Good luck!
