I have a theory; the baby receives nutrients, etc. from the mother through the umbilical cord and it's body is in rhythm with the mother's heart. When the time comes the baby's heart gets the kick start from the natural beat of the mother, then it good to go.
You asked a very good question though. Now I am curious. Very good question.

There are many theories and studies and explainations of what starts this process.... but in truth, no one knows why it starts beating out of the blue, anymore than they know what CAUSES life to come from seemingly nothing.

Its honestly a mystery without any true definitive explaination.

Although googling the theories, studies and beliefs on it are really quite interesting.
