The reason I think he might be is because I just finished reading "In Dubious Battle," where the protagonists were Communists and their cause was portrayed in a very sympathetic light.

You might consider him a socialist (which is not communist), because he believed in the rights of the working people, the underdogs, and that Big business should not be the only beneficiary of prosperity.

We could use more like him today.
