this is a tricky question.... bettas male or female should be by themselves in a small bowl (1-5 gallon)....
in a large tank (30 gallons) you can have 1 male and several females together. Give them plenty hiding places like plants, caves, rocks, driftwood.
and of cource you can have other fish with them.. Any fish that doesn't nip at the male's tale is fine.
and some females are very aggressive... You just have to see their individual personalities... I have a female that will bite me everytime I change the water... She just thinks my hand is food (i think).. She's cute though.

Contrary to some other answers you have received, you CANNOT put any betta with any other betta, male or female. They will attack anything that looks even remotely like a betta as well. In the wild, they are very solitary fish, and only meet up with each other very briefly to mate. Even after mating, the female leaves and the male takes care of the eggs. If you want another fish in the tank, try something else. Just be aware, the fish you put in there may not make it out alive.

You can put bettas with other fish, yup. Females are quite docile and can be kept with other community fish (she can be kept with other female bettas, but NOT male bettas). Just make sure she gets to eat - other fish can be pushy and females, as I say, are shy and docile. Provide lots of hiding areas and plants.
Males can also be kept in community tanks. However, they tend not to do well with fish that have long flowy fins that can be mistaken for other male bettas - so, guppies, angelfish, etc are not appropriate tankmates.
However tetras and that sort of thing are fine.

Many times, in a large enough tank, you can put female Bettas in together. 2 males together is a big no-no, though - they will kill each other. Same with a male and a female - it's misery for them.

It depends on how big the tank is. If it is pretty large you can have two males but each need their own "territory" in the tank. For females they can be put together but without a male.

You can put as many females together as you like. But the males have to be separate as they will fight and kill each other if put in the same tank.

Males can be with females, at least 2. Females can go with other fish. But don't put males with others.
