Instead of opening my browser to my homepage, http://www.yahoo.com, some kind of malicious software is changing my homepage to http://www.atotalsafety.com, and I am getting constant pop-up messages which try to get me to download security software (anti-spy, anti-adware, scans for spyware, spam protection, etc.). I have a very recent version of Norton Antivirus software installed and running, as well as the malicious software detection tool from Microsoft, but neither program is able to detect this malicious software described above. Has anyone else encountered this problem, and if so, how can it be resolved?

You have a browser hijacker. Should be easy to kill.
1st-Go to http://www.bitdefender.com/ and look at the bottom left of the page where it says 'Scan Now'. It's a free online virus scan. Let it scan and clean your system.
2nd- Download, install and update Ad-Aware. Then run a full scan and delete the crud it finds.
3rd- Download, install and update Spybot Search & Destroy. Run a full scan and delete the crud it may find.
These free tools should kill all the junk on your system. Remember: These apps (adaware and spybot) will kill adware. If you have shareware programs with adware components (They serve ads while you use them) this will kill them as well. WildTangent will also get nuked, for example. Its a form of ad/spyware.
As an extra: If you cant get to bitdefender online because the page is blocked put HOSTS in the Start->Search box and open it in NotePad. Find all listings ending in 127.0.0.1 (Like BitDefender 127.0.0.1) and erase them. Save it, then right click and choose 'properties', in the Properties box check the 'read only' box and then click 'apply' and close and try again. The 127.0.0.1 is a loop-back to keep you off these sites. Making it read only (Hopefully) stops the malware from readding the loopback addresses.
Next, dump Norton and get Kaspersky. It uses less resouces with better results.
Good luck.

It's a bug on Google's end, not ours. All we can do wait is patiently wait until they get the matter resolved. For now, if you must use Google, just copy and paste the url on the the bottom of the link you want to use. Or just use another search engine. I gotta tell you, it scared me too. But I relaxed once I realized this couldn't possibly be true. Every single site, minor or major, business or personal, is all malware? It would take a lot of organization and way more than one person to make that happen all at the same time.

You have a highjacker. go to Lavasoft and download Adaware SE, it is free, then add SpyBot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster. Run your antivirus program in soft mode and see what can pull out.. I would not put in High Jack This unless you know exactly how to deal with it, it is not for a novice. You might consider adding CCleaner also to clean up the left over mess. It is free also. Good Luck.

Your computer has been hijacked by http://atotalsafety.com/. this is a very dangerus hijacker now-a-days.
If your computer has been infected with Codec (such as; Perfect Codec, Super Codec, Gold Codec) and hijacked by the http://atotalsafety.com/ then your computer is in a real danger because it does transfer back and forth information from the infected computer which makes it a potential for data theft.
for more information and manual removal follow the below link : -

Its called a browser hijacker. Some are very hard to get rid of. If microsoft defender won't do it you could download "hijack this" from download.com. If you are not computer savvy maybe you should consult your local computer shop for help.
