The word Tipi comes into English from the Lakota language.
The Lakota/Sioux indians of the Great Plains are the ones who invented the "tipi"
The Sioux word "tipi" comes from "ti" which means to dwell or live and "pi" which means used to live in.

Some interesting facts about the tipi is that the door/entrance must always face the west....also every pole has a different meaning.

Here is a great site for more information on it...... http://www.btigerlily.net/BTTipi.html

They were probably 'invented' too long ago to know the answers, though why is easy...as easy shelter for a nomadic lifestyle of the Plains people. Supposedly other people in different parts of the the world once also built similar structures.

It's hard to say because Native Americans did not document who "invented" what or how they did it. They probably invented these things as communities and the importance of who specifically came up with teh idea gradually faded. Many of their innovations had to do with simply living in their environment. Others were impressive ways to form art and jewelry that people still use today.
