1. Multiplications and Divisions should be done first.
2. Addition and Subtraction should be done next.
3. Proceed left to right
6 x 7 + 6 - 2 x 9 =
(6 x 7) is Multiplication and must be done first. Also
(2 x 9) is Multiplication as well.
This becomes:
6 x 7 + 6 - 2 x 9 =
42 + 6 - 18 = (because 6 x 7 = 42 and 2 x 9 = 18)
Then proceed left to right.
42 + 6 - 18 = becomes
48 - 18 = (because 42 + 6 = 48)
then finally, 48 - 18 = 30
and so,
6 x 7 + 6 - 2 x 9 = 18

Normally it is as mountain bike man says.
Some computer programming languages use a directional order. For example, in APL, 2x9 would be done first (=18), then 6 - (2x9) = 6 -18 = -12, then 7 + -12 = -5 and, finally 6 x -5 for a final answer of -30. In other cases, the operations are done in the order they are found (start with 6x7, then add 6, then take away 2 and, finally, multiply the last result by 9).
However, these are special cases. Unless you know that the problem asks for such a specific order (and they would have to tell you), use the PEMDAS.
