ok.. as unique as it may sound. That kid will be mocked by her friends and school mates. Besides, i'd hate to be her on the first day of school when teachers try to pronounce that name.

Believe me I know, I have a unique name and i used to hate first day of school. Teachers will find ways to screw up that name.

How the hell did she come up with such an oddball name? Was she high on some sort of drugs? Good grief, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite that weird. I think that name would be pronounced zayraks; I don't know where she gets off with the "z" sound on the end. The kid would be ridiculed like crazy, I would probably call her Xerox or something like that.

She's obviously reaching for the weirdest, stupidest name she can find. The poor kid will be cursed with it, too. I guess there has to be certain percentage of the population that is a certified nutjob and seems like she is one.

That is one of the worst names I have ever heard.

1) What is up with the pronunciation?
2) Spell made-up names they way they're pronounced.
3) It sounds like a genie.
4) It's almost a palindrome.

Elyse, however, isn't bad. Will she consider naming it Elyse Jr? Even calling a girl Jr can't be worse than Xaharax. It sounds like an impotence medication for men named Aladdin.

I agree, it sounds like a Herpes Med. Maybe as a middle name and let the little girl choose to use it or not when she is older. When kids get to Kindergarten a lot of learning centers around their names and with a name like that it's not going to be good. Also, her teachers and others will mutilate it causing her constant embarrassment and dejection from constantly having to correct them.
Your sister needs to think about this baby's future. It may seen neat now but she needs to seriously think of every repercussion possible before saddling a kid with a name like this.

Naming a child is a very difficult and wonderful thing. We knew before our son was born what we would call him, but chose another more "common" name as his legal name. They are part of the same, so it made sense --to us! He got to 3rd grade before he changed it. So, remember, it's your SIL's responsibility and privilege and you really don't have a say. But, if she asks you, you can politely say that the trend now is to go with more traditional names to avoid the stigmatism that comes when the child becomes an adult and applies for a job. My job requires me to review resumes and I can honestly say one's name has a bearing on whether that candidate gets a chance at an interview. Don't even go there with the racism card, I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the ability for clients to pronounce the name of a salesperson easily. BTW, my son's nickname is Topher, you know, the last part of ChrisTOPHER. :-)

It's a cruel and selfish thing for a mother to name their child something that will cause suffering, sadness and anguish for the rest of the child's life. You're in a tough spot though, because you don't want to alienate family even if they're being weird. I'd just ask her to think about how she'd feel if that was her name, and try to remember back to Kindergarten or grade school. There's a chance she wants to doom her daughter intentionally; in which case I feel sorry for them both.

I work on the maternity unit of a large hospital and see ALL kinds of strange names. First, she's going to spend her life answering two questions. One, how do you pronounce it? And, two, what does it mean. Kids will undoubtedly be cruel, like EEEEWWWW that's a weird name. And, why did they name you THAT!
Especially in a family of traditional names ----try to talk her out of it.

I think it is horrible. What is your sister in law's name??? I'm sure she doesn't have to go around with a stupid name. I think it is a fad for parents to come up with the most stupidest and hardest to spell name ever!!

I think as a parent, you need to name your child a name that you wouldn't mind being called yourself.

Lets all stick to the good names please. Plus, how is this kid ever going to learn how to spell this name???? Something else to think about.

It sounds more like the name of a drug. I personally do not like it but it is her baby. I can't believe they mock "Elyse"! It's a very pretty name.
