Try to get your legs stronger by running, doing squats, or leg lifts.

Question: do your legs tire easily with other sports, or just swimming? Are you streching properly, etc. before you swim??? Often times, since the leg muscles are the largest in the body, simple things such as stretching properly before, drinking enough water, etc., can make a huge difference.

However, I was a person who suffered from the same issue. The difference was made when I started not just stretching, etc., but also riding my bikes 5 days per week, sometimes mountain, sometimes road, depending on the weather. Everyone is different, but often times cross training makes the difference, and doing something aerobic like biking a few hours per week really helps.

I believe others gave you a very good advice, such as strengthening your leg muscle.

But if all the other stuff you can do won't help, and the hurt is bothering you too much, maybe you can do a checkup to see if the blood circulation at the leg is normal and healthy.

The reason why I raise this point is I love doing aerobics. But the cuff of my right leg gets cramped soon after I started the aerobics exercise for 15 minutes, and it would last till I stop the exercise. So my personal trainer advised me to check up the blood circulation at my leg.

Do a combination of dry land exercises combined with the swimming. LIfting weights with your legs is great for going along with the swimming workouts. Legs are huge part of your workout when it comes to swimming. I was a competitive swimmer for 12 years and I had huge upper leg strength. I can remember being in gym in High School, co-ed class, and bench pressing with my legs up to 400 pounds - it really impressed all the guys - none of them could do the same. That'll tell you how much a swimmer uses their legs. Be sure to do alot of stretching exercises before you even get in the water too, that helps too - when your muscles are warmed up they'll make it easier to keep going. Be patient, to actually get in shape with swimming it'll take a good 3-4 weeks before you see some results. Longer if your legs are really as well developed.

First off, What kind of shape are you in? If you've been sedentary for the last 20 years, yes it's going to hurt. If you are in reasonable shape – and be realistic about this- then no your legs shouldn’t hurt, and you should go see a doc to find out if you have something else going on. When you say they hurt, is it a muscle getting tired hurt or a bone scraping on bone hurt?

If you been sedentary, have patience, it’s going to take you a while to build up your muscles.

Good luck!

You just need to build up endurance. Keep practicing. Maybe shorten your time swimming and then gradually increase it.
