i've noticed this is commonplace here. someone wanted to know how old is the nfl. two people correctly answered with 1920.
the person picking 1869 was picked.... that was the start of what would become the ncaa.... could it be misinformed people voting or just picking the first anwer that shows up?
tell me.

Yeah, it irritates the hell out of me too. Its the nature of the system when the asker picks the best answer, but the asker of course has SOME responsibility to actually see which answer IS CORRECT! Many are just too lazy, I'm afraid.

It gets so bad that there will be a question posted on Sunday morning: "Who will win the game today between the Pats and the Dolphins?"

The Q may attract good and bad answers, even some that excellently mention the improving play of the Dolphins and the injuries and personel holes of the Pats, however ON MONDAY afternoon, a full day AFTER the Dolphins have crushed the Pats 21-0, the Asker picks the following completely idiotic reply:

"The Pats will beat the stupid Fish 55-3 and win the SB! Guaranteed! Go Patriots!"

Another thing is that many people will go back and select their own answers as best during the voting, no matter what, in order to simply run up their points. Sometimes only one vote, (theirs) is submitted and they win, no matter how stupid it is.

It is nice when the participants have at least a little sense of honour. Saturday, someone asked "Who will win the game between Seahawks and Cardinals?" I answered that given the facts, I had a feeling that a huge Seattle blowout was in the cards..... I did NOT go back and vote for that as the best answer, as it SO OBVIOUSLY wasn't.........

I don't see that there is any real correction possible within this system, but yes, its very annoying............

Sometimes the asker does not have any idea of the answer so they just pick one. Usually it's wrong. What I do when I answer questions is mention that the person above (by name) is wrong. This probably helps. I only do it if I know for sure that I am correct. I have over 150 best answers and 1300 answers so far.

Usually, it's the person who asked the question that decides which answer is the best. If the asker doesn't know, the answer that is most appealing to him will get chosen. So it's not fair, but what is?

I guess the system picks a random answer after some time if there are no votes.

No offense intended, but when you have dumb people asking dumb questions, they're going to pick dumb answers.
