6 answers

1. x + y + z = 500

2. y = 4x

3. z = 5y

2. x = y/4

substituting 2 and 3 into 1 gives
y/4 + y + 5y = 500

multiply by 4
y + 4y + 20y = 2000
25y = 2000
y=2000/25 = 80

substituting y into 2 ( x= y/4)
x = 80/4 =20

substituting y into 3 (z=5y)
z = 80 x 5 = 400

The equation you are looking for is:
x+4x(the second number is 4 times the first)+5(4x)(the third is 5 times the second)=500
x+4x+5(4x)=500
x+4x+20x=500
25x=500
x=20
Work it backwards:
20+4*20+5(4*20)=500
20+80+400=500
