Timbuktu was the capital of a major African civilization during the period of the European middle ages. There were also Islamic universities situated in Timbuktu beginning in AD 989 or so.

Might be looking for Alexandria, in Egypt. It held what was once the World's largest library, all stored on hand-copied scrolls. It burned down, and many works by authors like Plato and Aristotle were lost forever.
