So im gonna get my friend a eel for christmas, but i dont know how long a eel will survive in a plastic bag filled with water. I figure its probably the same amount of time as a gold fish. So my question is how long can a goldfish stay in plastic bag filled with water till it dies?

Does your friend want the eel? Please make sure that he wants it and is equipped to properly care for it (find a good caresheet, print it, and stick it in the card ;)). Some eels get huge and will eat all other fish, and some eels need brackish or salt water.
Anyhoo, that said, in a proper-sized back with enough air, I would be comfortable leaving a fish in a bag for up to 18 hours.

Make sure it's a big bag, 1/3 water and 2/3 air. Get a bag buddy which you can put in the water; it will help keep ammonia down and will keep the air oxygenated.

I wouldn't necessarily compare the two.

It would be easier if you simply said how long the eel will have to be in the bag, and ask if he will survive. Obviously, you want to make the time as short as humanly possible.

please, don't buy a live pet for another person unless you know how to take care of it and they know how to take care of it.

I know it sucks and it sounds like a cool gift, but fish from the neighborhood petstore won't last more than a couple hours in those thin bags.

a dead fish in a bag is a pretty crappy gift. get your friend a gift card and let him/her pick out the fish.

Not sure but if the PH of the water is not right it shortens the life expectancy of the fish.
