I live in Mexico and as far as I know taking a sabbatical year here is not that common. So I can't just say that to the interviewer: "I took a sabbatical year". In many places it's not well thought of. Anyway, I took one, in part, because I underwent minor surgery and also because I traveled for the summer. I don't believe I should disclose the surgery thing and I only traveled for about two months not twelve. What can I say when the interviewer asks me "So, it's been over a year you graduated what have you been doing all this time?" Help please.

I’m an accountant and I’m mainly going to interviews in accounting firms.

Thank you.

I have a similar problem because I've done some world travel (3 years) and there are large gaps in my employment. I generally don't say anything unless they ask, and then just say 'I travelled the world, to get it out of my system and now I'm ready to settle down and work hard.'

It's tough, because if an employer sees that you like to travel, some think that it makes you a 'flight risk' so to speak. Just stress that it was a planned break and now it's behind you.

Good luck :-)

Most employers don't care how you spent your sabbatical, they just want you to account for the missing employment time on your CV. If it happens to come up, just tell the truth. You spent part of that time recouperating from surgery (it's up to you if you want to disclose what type of surgery) and part of it traveling.

At least that's how it would go in the USA. I don't know what the hiring practices are like in Mexico.

just be honest. You graduated, school was tough, you took some time for yourself after school and now you are ready to start your career... I don't see anyone really objecting to that.
