I'm 33 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child. I've had gestational diabetes with all three pregnancies. The normal course of action for me has been to control it with diet and exercise.

With this pregnancy my blood sugars have been higher than with the last two so they're thinking about putting me on an oral medication to help control them. One of the hardest things for me is to actually prick my fingers several times a day. It's getting a little easier, but I'm terrified of needles so I have to build up my confidence every time I go to test my blood sugars. Luckily there really is no pain from it and the monitor is easy to use and understand.

I dream in chocolate. I mean that literally. I dream about cakes and candies and puddings and all of them are chocolate. Other than missing my sugar though, the low carb diet isn't that bad.

It's all worth it in the end when you see that cute little face and know that everything you did for him/her while you were pregnant paid off.

I did have Gestational Diabetes with my last pregnancy. Everything about that pregnancy was unusual. I got pregnant even though I had been on the Pill for 11 years. Our older kids were 18, 15, and 12 when our little surprise was born. I was 17 weeks along before I found out that the severe pain in my stomach after I ate and heart burn was not Irritable Bowel Syndrome like my doctor thought. I had no appetite throughout that pregnancy and had a hard time eating everything the nurse at the high risk/diabetes clinic put on my eating plan. I kept losing weight and they kept upping my food, but I just couldn't eat enough. I really got tired of the glucose testing. I felt like a pin cushion. A lot of times I had to close my eyes and have my husband do the finger pricking to get the drop of blood. I developed a seemingly uncontrollable urge to pull my finger away from the lancet. The day my daughter was born, I weighed 25 pounds less than my pre-pregnancy weight. I did not need insulin. My daughter did not grow large, which is one of the things that happens with moms who have Gestational Diabetes. I had a weekly non-stress test and ultrasound the 11 weeks before she was born to keep track of her. She only weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces and was born 1 week past her due date. Unfortunately, I gained all my weight back, which is something I constantly work on controlling since women who have had Gestational Diabetes have a greater risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy. At that time, we treated it with diet, I did not need insulin etc. However a few years ago, i was diagnosed with insulin resistance (there is a link between insulin resistance and gestational diabetes im told). At that time my OBGYN put me on Glucophage which helps your body use up the glucose. I am now pregnant again and my doctor has kept me on Glucophage. Now my blood glucose levels are in a good range and I do not show any sugar in my urine either. I am 20 weeks along. I still try to follow the low carb diet and it is hard to do. I try to get all of my carbs from fresh fruit and veggies instead of breads and pastas. I know some doctors have differing views on the use of Glucophage but I think it is worth asking your doctor about. It may not be suitable in your specific case but its worth a shot in my opinion. Hope this helps. Good luck, you are almost done with your pregnancy but keep the glucophage in mind for the next time around.

I had it when I was pregnant with my daughter (2yrs ago). It wasn't that bad. More of a pain in the butt than anything else. The diet did get pretty boring. I found that an omelette in the morning with cheese and lots of vegetable was quite filling. You will definitly want to eat 5 small meals a day. If they want you to take medicine because you can't control your sugar - I was on Glyberide (I think that was how it was spelled)
