Emerging technology is the most important.

Political changes since 1865 have been evolutionarily not revolutionary. The truly radical events of designing our government occurred with James Madison prior to 1865. The major social movements have largely been the results of technology. For example, industrial jobs and the birth control pill empowered women as never before. The invention of television allowed the nation to see the hypocrisy of Jim Crowe laws. Urbanization wouldn't have been possible without the engineering developments of the 1880's that enabled construction of tall multi-story buildings.

Technology has been moving at an exponential pace and continues to be the strongest factor affecting humanity. Check out this article. http://www.kurzweilai.net/articles/art0134.html?printable=1
