My kids have been making felt ornaments this year, which are pretty easy. Cut two felt outlines of a tree, a snowman, a bell (etc.), sew together but leave an inch so you can stuff with cotton. Add beads for features -- you can cut out a felt scarf in a contrasting color for the snowman.
We also made applesauce/spice ornaments one year, and they still smell great! (Although they are crumbling, so we keep them in an open box and not on the tree anymore -- about eight years old.) Take powdered cinnamon, nutmeg and all-spice (you can get HUGE bottles of these at Sam's or other warehousers), and mix in equal porportions. Add enough applesauce to form a dough. Roll it out, cut with cookie cutters, add fennel seeds, buttons, sparkles, etc. for the eyes and decorations, and then let them dry -- Oh, don't forget to make a hole near the top so you can thread a ribbon through to hang on the tree.
Another thing I did was potpourri hearts -- I took leftover scraps of my wedding dress, and crazy-quilted it. Then I cut hearts out of the crazy quilt, and stuffed the hearts with potpourri after sewing them together. Don't forget a ribbon at the cleft of the heart for hanging.
(-: We have a very fragrant Christmas!
Oh, and here's another easy one: go for a walk in the park, and pick up twigs and acorns. Paint gold, and scent with peppermint oil. Place on top of the branches.
And don't forget the old popcorn string! Cranberry or raisin strings are also possible.
Don't feel like you have to do everything this year -- it's fun to concentrate on one craft per year, and your tree grows fancier and fancier each year -- and the memories accumulate!
Have fun!
