I dont see how that could happen. I always thought coffin lids were screwed down before the funeral.

Tomorrows another day..

I dont know any, but at a funeral i always have a dread that the bearers will drop the coffin or something. I imagine they are well made enough to survive a few bumps and know they are secured down - screws i suppose.

Let's hope the dead rest in the peace of God.

One superstition was you were to cover all the mirrors in your home. Back when you had your loved one laid out in your living room or parlor for 3 days. I can't remember the reasoning behind it, it was on a documentary about death on television. I must confess, I was only half listening to the program. I was pregnant with my daughter when a friend of mine son died at 2 years old. I went to the funeral and I had her and her friend get upset that I was there being pregnant. I asked "why"? They told me that my baby would be born dead because I looked at a dead child. My daughter was born healthy. I do not think you can believe in superstition and God.

I do not know whether this is a superstition or plain manners but I was always told that one should never talk badly of the dead.
Some people believe that the spirits of the departed watch over their funerals, so anyone who talked bad of them, would leave the departed in emotional turmoil which would not aid them in their ethereal journey.

Chinese superstition:
Whenever the lids fell off, it means the deceased is still attached to this world, unwilling to leave. He or she may have still have grievances that is yet to solve. Normally, prayers would be said, to appease the departed and ask them to go on their way to the other side. He or she may also be angry about how the last wishes were carried out.
