Of course the other answer is correct. But the "practical" way to remember this is that 9 knots is equal to about 10 mph (rounded). 18 knots = 20 mph (rounded) 27 knots = 31 mph, etc. So, it's there is not a real meaningful difference unless one is going really fast or really far.

And a knot is 1 nautical mile per hour. a nautical mile is about 15% lomger than a land mile.
