The thing I've always wanted to invent is some kind of text display for the outside of cars, that you could use to send messages to other drivers. For example, if you accidentally cut someone off, you could have the display say SORRY. If you see a great looking sports car, you could say something like "Nice wheels." And if you see a pretty girl, it could say "Follow me!"
I don't know how many times I've been frustrated by an inability to communicate with other drivers. You'd probably want some kind of voice recognition, because you don't want to be typing when you're driving. And you might want to program something to limit obscenities. But in general I think this is a much needed invention that would sell well.

How about some nanobots that sit on your TV or computer screen? They recharge by absobing the light from the screen and when you turn off the monitor they scurry around the surface and clean off the dust and fingerprints. Afterwards, they go hide in the corner again.
If we are going completely gonzo, imagine that everyone has their own cloud of nanobots that hover over their heads. Need a cup to drink coffee? Just say "coffee cup" and hold out your hand and the nanobots assemble themselves into a cup - or a blanket - or a hat - or a telephone. When you are done, simply utter a key word and they dissolve into the cloud that follows you around.
Need something a bit more doable? Think about the large billboards you see along the highway and what it takes to print and apply them to the billboards. Now imagine that you had a large handheld multicolor paint applicator (like a large inkjet printer head) that "knew" exactly where it was on the billboard - you could do this with a few ultrasonic detectors at each corner. Now all you have to do is load the sprayer with a digital image file and wave it around on the billboard - the print head senses where it is on the billboard and applies the proper color or mix of colors. This one is doable using today's technology.
Of course if you go out and actually build one of these things, be sure to send me my 10% imagineering fee :-)

I have an idea you can work on. Ever notice how the news today is all war, corruption, death, disaster, recessions, global warming, crime, celebrity gossip, etc.? Ever notice how most of it has very little to do with our actual lives, except to depress or scare us?
What about the rest of the news that we never hear? How about a news web site that deliberately ignores the outright negative stuff, but supplies other news, like how a company is making a product that will improve our lives, or maybe how a new drug looks promising to treat disease X, or maybe articles on how to get the best deal on stuff.
I call this "The Rest of the News." You could do a project of how you'd bring this kind of news network, site or paper to the marketplace.
I hope you find this helpful.
To Red F: I've seen those already in catalogs.

Automated cat lasers.
Ever see how cats go absolutely mental over chasing the laser dot from a laser pointer? What the world needs is a device you can hang on the wall that you can set to shoot lasers for awhile to entertain your cat when you're not home. All cat owners would buy it. In fact I'll pre-order right now, want my Visa card number?
