Sherman Alexie:

Spokane/Coeur d'Alene tribe (he grew up in a Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington)

He has won numerous literary awards, and has been honored at a number of American universities. You can find him in most U.S. Literature anthologies, especially college level. He writes a lot about his experiences as a native American in modern culture.

...not a fan myself, but I think he fits your description.

I'm Cape Verdean/Portuguese-American...I Just Think Of Ethnicity As Being Where You Can Trace Your Roots To...Usually You Have A Cultural Flag...I Can Trace Mine To Cape Verde Islands & Portugual...I Was Born In the U.S. But My Grandparents & Great-Grandparents Etc Were Either From Cape Verde or Portugual (Depending On Which Side Of My Family You Are Speaking To)...I Was Lucky Enough To Meet Both My Maturnal & Paturnal Great-Grandparents Before They Passed And I Was Able To Get A History Lesson From Them Each Time I Visited. Point Being Is That Many African-Americans Cannot Trace Their Ethnic History As Far Back As They Would Like...Not Through Any Fault Of Their Own; But How Do You Trace Something When Members Of Your Family Were Not Even Allowed To Read, Documents Were Thrown Away From Your Past Etc.... I Have An African Friend Who HATES It When African-American People Say They Are African, I Try To Let Him Know That Just Remember He Has His History & Family Living In Africa Still, But Many African-Americans Do Not Even Now Where To Start Looking For Where They Are *FROM* Other Than Knowing That At Some Point In Their History Their Family Members Were Taken Out Of Africa....Since They Were Taken Out Of Africa Through No Choice Of Their Own, How Can ANYONE Really Trace Back & Be 100% Sure Of What They Are Finding Out To Be True? Alex Haley Did Some Research....Is Anyone Else Out There Like Him Willing To Sit Down For Years To Find Out Who They Really Are?....Yes!....But Sadly, Many Have No Idea Where To Start.

I found found this:
Some of the most famous Native Americans featured in movies include Johnny Depp, Cher (who is part Cherokee), James Garner (Cherokee), Benjamin Bratt, Kevin Costner, Lou Diamond Philips, Wayne Newton, and Demi Moore.

I don't know if any of them speak the language though.
