Speedometer Cable, Sometimes it's the Speedometer head, that breaks....but most often it's the little plastic gear that's on the other end of the cable that wears out, that's simple to fix......IF you know how. If you don't know, better take it to a qualified mechanic, other wise you could conceivably do it wrong and really tear things up, but if you really want to try it, get a mechanic's handbook for your particular make and model of car and follow the directions to the letter...Good Luck

The thing that tells your speed is the speedometer and if it has quit working it could be a number of things. your speedometer cable may have come disconected at either end. (Rare) it may have worn out. (it is square on each end and if bound may round off.) the speedometer itself may have just quit. (Common) however if it is a digital speedometer then you have a whole new set of problems to which I have no answer. you will probably need professional help with the digital.

ok if its a newer car it probably is a electronic speedometer if older it could be a cable driven speed sensor the though of your speedometer it self going bad is rare but the speed sensor on your transmission probably went bad unless its a ford it could be on the rear differential if you have rear wheel drive hope this helps

If the odometer quit working too, it's the cable to the transmission, or the gear in the transmission that drives the cable. If the odometer still works, the speedometer is bad.

You need a complete engine overhaul. New tires would help also.
