I heard that it used to be something like 6'5 or 6'6 or 6'7 and the actor who played Basl Fawlty whose name escapes me at the moment was a bit miffed cos he just missed the height to be called a giant! That was USED to be. There are so many tall people now that i wouldnt know what the definition was. The tallest man i ever knew was 6'8. My hub is 6'4. I know there is some sort of worldwide dating club for tall people. I think girls have to be over 6' to get in, not sure about guys. Interesting question anyway.

Giantism is not just about height, but it is actually a disease caused by an excessive secretion of the growth hormone by the pituitary gland. When this excessive secretion occurs in childhood (when the growth cartilage is open and the child can still gain height) the condition is called gigantism, and this kids usually grow very tall. When the excessive secretion occurs after the growth cartilage is closed (around 17-20 years old), the condition is called acromegaly and it causes an enlargement of the extremities and facial features, with no increase in height. So, if you happen to meet a guy 12 feet tall, make sure to ask him how his growth hormone levels were in his childhood, before calling him a giant. If they were normal, you´ll just have to call him extremely tall guy. Of course, most of the extremely tall people are hormonal giants.

The tallest man on record is Robert Wadlow, an Illinois man who died at
2.71m (8ft 11in) in 1940 at the age of 22. The record may not stand for much
longer, however. This week, Leonid Stadnyk, a 33-year-old living in a remote
village in Ukraine, hit the news as the world's tallest living man. At 2.54m
(8ft 4in), he is just 17cm short of Wadlow's record. In the past two years,
he has grown 30cm.

Like Wadlow, Stadnyk owes his extraordinary height to a tumour on his
pituitary gland. The tumour churns out growth hormone but it's a secondary
effect that leads to the runaway growth that doctors call acromegalic
gigantism.

Normally, the growth of our bones is limited by our sex hormones. A good
burst of sex hormones at the right time tells the ends of our bones to stop
growing. In acromegalic gigantism, as the tumour grows, it destroys cells in
the pituitary gland that stimulate the release of sex hormones. The bones,
therefore, never get the signal to stop growing.

But surely there must be a limit to a person's height? John Wass, a
specialist in acromegalic gigantism at the University of Oxford, reckons it
would be impressive to survive for long if you grew taller than 9ft.

First, high blood pressure in the legs, caused by the sheer volume of blood
in the arteries, can burst blood vessels and cause varicose ulcers. An
infection of just such an ulcer eventually killed Wadlow.

With modern antibiotics, ulcers are less of an issue now, and most people
with acromegalic gigantism eventually die because of complications from
heart problems. "Keeping the blood going round such an enormous circulation
becomes a huge strain for the heart," says Wass.

As you can see it wouldn´t be possible to survive if you grew taller than 9ft, so I guess we will never know.

The excessive height of the pituitary giant, which is defined at various levels above 7 ft (213 cm), is caused by excessive growth of the long bones.

Typical adult heights of Americans and Europeans to whom the term might be applied are 7.5 to 8.5 feet (216-259 cm), although the term is rarely applied to basketball players and those whose heights appear to be the healthy result of normal genetics and nutrition.

At one point medically it was 7 foot! I heard once that is why the basketball player Bill Walton never let them list him over 6/11 because he did not want to be considered a freak!
