I had one, but didn't use it for every diaper change. I emptied it about once a week. After four months, the container smelled very moldy and I couldn't get rid of the smell no matter what cleaning products I used, so I threw it away.

I had a "Diaper Champ" which is like a diaper genie but better because you don't have to buy special bags. These things are very useful, but not absolutely necessary if you take out the trash every day.

Keep in mind that baby poo from baby fed only breastmilk doesn't really stink. When baby starts formula, poo is a little smelly. Now when baby starts food, that poo will stink up the room unless trash is taken out every day or unless contained in diaper genie/champ.

So, it's not absolutely necessary; however, like a "wipes warmer" it's nice extra luxury to have if you got the money.

Go with the new diaper genie 2...it's a much better product and is VERY effective.

I found it to be a nuisance. The diaper genie wasn't where I was changing her diaper. I didn't change her in her room all the time. Her diapers didn't smell that bad at first and when they did we just stuck them in a empty grocery bag and tied it. I actually threw it away. I hated having to cut the bag. I never tied it correctly and it wouldn't twist right.

A diaper genie is a waste of money, I use bags from the grocery store, put a soiled diaper in, tied it in a knot and drop it in the pail, dump the diaperpail, or trashcan everynight, and spray the inside ofthe can with Lysol.

I had one, it was great in the room since it was close by, I always cleaned the inside with lysol after changing it to help kill some of the odor. But it ended up breaking after awhile and then I just took the diapers out to our garage where our garbage is that goes out to the road. So if you have another place where you can put the diapers with a cover on it then you should be fine.

I live in the UK and have a Tommy Tippee Nappy Wrapper and I think it is great. The refills are a bit pricey but it saves having to go outside to the dustbin everytime you have a real stinker of a nappy. The top of the thing twists and all the nappies are wrapped up like a big long length of sausges so no smells get out.
Sometimes it smells inside when you open it (which you only do when you empty it, every few days) but I spray Febreeze in mine and that keeps it smelling a bit sweeter.
Well worth the money I say!

I had one with my first child and it was hard to load, the refills got costly, and everyother day I had to take out the dirty diapers. With my second daughter I just used one that used trash bags. Well needless to say that I just throw it away with the daily trash. It's a whole lot easier. No matter what you use, I don't care what other people say, it still smells maybe not at first but give it a week or two and it will. So to answer your question, no on both fronts.

The bad thing about a diaper genie is that you have to spend alot of money on the refills... its not worth it....
it depends on where you change your baby... if its close to the kitchen where the trash is or not.
i don't remember the name, but they sell a baby diaper thingy that takes regular trash bags, i have one, it works, doesn't smell.... but i didn't use it much because i live in a very small apartment, changed my kid on the couch, the garbage was 15 steps away... no needs for a special thing :)
Good luck!

Not necessary. I had one with both my children but only used it for a about wk each one. I ended up saving the plastic bags you get from the grocery store and putting the diaper in that bag and putting it in the dumpster of outside trashcan. The diaper gene's I had always had issues.
