i have been riding dirtbikes(not racing) for 2 years, im 14 years old and i just grew out of my XR100.now i want to buy a used 250F for under $2500.My dad who is a mechanic wants me to buy a new 250 from a generic brand called tank for $1600.Im trying to convince him that generic brands are not good.the generic 250 is 290 pounds, which is 86 pounds heavier than a yamaha 2002 YZ250(207 pounds). is 86 pounds heavier enough for me to notice?

which bike should i get?

plz email me.

I don't care what your dad says. NEVER buy a generic brand. They're cheap knock offs of real bikes.
They have zero quality control = the parts are made of inferior materials and break easy.
When the bike breaks (notice I said when and not if?) you won't be able to get parts for it.
Do a web search - you won't find anything.
No company sells aftermarket parts for Tank motorcycles.
Have you ever heard the saying "You get what you pay for"?
Keep your XR100 for backup and let your dad buy that piece of junk.

If you are tall enough to fit a modern 250F then by all means get one (NOT the generic...no,no,no). The major players (yamaha, suzuki, kawa, honda) all make awesome machines. If you are not going to be racing motocross, you might think about going w/one of the off road machines such as a wr250f. They are a little heavier, but have lights, kickstand, coolant reservoir. After riding an xr100, you are going to notice the weight of the bigger bike no matter what. But the difference in feel between 290 pounds and 207 would be VERY noticable if you could compare them. Especially in tight trails.
The only issue I have with modern performance 4-strokes, is that they are not as bullet-proof as older engines (and I can definately live with this, considering performance). Valves wear faster and are not as easily adjustible, and they use somewhat less durable engine/tranny components to reduce weight (although extremely well engineered).
Overall, assuming you are big enough to handle one, definately get a brand name modern 250F. You WILL appreciate their power, weight, and handling characteristics.

yea the generic brands are not good yamaha is a good bike and so is honda kawasaki and suzuki are aright i really had better luck with honda and yamaha but that guy is right the yz85 the two strokes have a better power to weight ratio and are tons easiser to work on but a 250f would be faster than an 85 so a yz125 would be a fast bike i ride a 01 cr 125 rebuilt it once in the top end its a good bike id get a two stroke but if you want that bike get the yamaha the generic wont have a power band like yamaha will and it will be probably as slow as your 100 but yea 86 pounds you will feel it good luck in convincing your dad i know how my mom was

You're big enough for a 250. I would go with the Yamaha yzf 250. Honda's are great too, but a lot of valve probs that they ironed out after 2005, so beware of used before that date. Yamaha's are great bikes that if you get an '03 or newer or an older with an upgraded cam, are an easy start. The Yamaha weighs about 220lbs.
