Because you have 20 goldfish in your tank.

The "1 inch per gallon" rule does NOT apply to goldfish!

Goldfish are huge waste producers. They are poop machines and they churn out ammonia.

The smaller, "fancy" goldfish require 15 gallons of water PER FISH, at least. Larger goldfish like comets, shubunkins, commons, etc require PONDS or huge tanks. Even if they are babies.

How big is your tank? Please bring the goldfish back to your petstore. They will be better off there. In the meantime, do daily water changes to remove some of the toxic ammonia and nitrites.
