IM not really sure but I know that in the 16th century during the Reformation, Protestants abandoned the usage of Catholic names such as William instead using Biblical names... so maybe thats when "Bill" came about, so it doesnt sound like william?

I can only ask the same question about the nickname Jack, for someone named Johnathon!
Or the nickname Peggie from the name Margaret? Where did that come from?

I am still trying to figure out why the nickname for John is Jack. Is John so hard to say that they needed a nickname for it? I don't know. All I know is, if a name has only one syllable then you really don't need a nickname.
