Check for bubbles in the radiator. Don't open it while hot, do it when it is cool. Sounds like a blown head gasket.

As others right here have suggested it will be distinct issues. Overheating must be led to with techniques from low coolant, stuck/tired thermostat, water pump, radiator, etc. Is the cooling fan operating? Smokes from the component to the water pump - must be a gasket leak besides with the water pump and this is the coolant burning off of the engine. examine around the pump to ensure if there is any coolant leaking. Is there any coolant on the floor lower than the vehicle? Edit: So actually your vehicle overheated because you lost your coolant. If all of your coolant leaked out it appears like both the water pump gasket failed and also you lost your fluid there, or the radiator is improperly leaking, or between the hoses became disconnected, or replaced into cracked and ruptured. previously you look at some thing else on the engine examine all of your hoses and look to ensure if one in each and every of them got here free or if any of them are ruptured. in case you could not discover the issue fill the radiator with coolant and run the engine to ensure the position the water is leaking from and with any luck there you'll discover your situation. If it replaced right into a free hose you'll only ought to reconnect and tighten each and each and every of the clamps. If it replaced right into a ruptured hose you'll of route ought to interchange that, yet i ought to also propose that you replace both the better and reduce rad hoses, somewhat because you in elementary words offered this vehicle used. So look on the hoses, fill up the rad, examine the water pump, rad and hoses for the leak. good luck i wish you get this example fastened.

Sounds like a head gasket, you wont know that because the car will overheat at about 15 miles or It could be your water pump too.have your water pump checked first because It Is cheaper and check all your hoses too

A 20 year old Calais is a money pit. You should sell it or junk it.

Blown head gasket, cracked head....it doesn't really matter. It's too serious to start pouring serious money into that old clunker.
