I want to use the following in a sentence, but I'm not sure which is grammatically correct. These are events that occurred in the past:

"What pain must he have endured..."

or
"What pain must have he endured...:

or ????

Also,

"What pain must his mother have endured..."

or

"What pain must have his mother endured..."

also, does anyone know what this particular past tense is known as? I know it might sound awkward but it fits in the essay. Thanks!

"must have he" and "must have his" sound more correct.

Couldn't tell you what past tense this is. Probably subjunctive participle past perfect or other such nonsense...

The "have endured" part of the verb should not be split up, so go with the first one on both of these. I think the tense is the present perfect subjunctive.
