If a player cheats by diving should he be punished after the event by the FA or Football League if it goes un-noticed by the referee?

I know that diving is difficult to prove, but there have been instances were players are blatantly diving, Ronaldo, Diouf, Owen, Savage, etc, in an effort to either gain a penalty or to get another player sent off. There is nothing more annoying than seeing a player that has barely ben touched rolling around on the floor like he has been shot, and then getting to his feet after the other player has been booked or dismissed, and then sprinting the full length of the pitch like he has been healed by the Almighty.

yes, the view is that if it is seen and dealt with by the referee on the pitch, that decision can't really be overturned.

however it must be very hard for referees to make a decision and be 100% confident that have got it right, that is why most diving offences are only awarded a free kick.

punishment and fines should be implemented - and managers liek stuart pearce (who condemned his player for diving at the weekend) are correct to stand up and oppose their own players, it is wrong.

Wenger, Mourhino... wake up and smell the coffee, sort your players out!

Yes becasue diving has got to stop. The game does not need Ronaldo's. Like other people have said though, with some challenges you cannot be 100% sure whether a player has actually dived or not. This is why you need a panel like the dubious goals panel. If it is a blatant dive and the whole panel agrees then the player should be punished, i.e 3 match ban. If the majority of the panel agrees then the punishment should not be so severe.

As much as I'd like to say yes. Sometimes if you are moving at speed and try to avoid a challenge you may go down. If the ref then decides this is a foul from the intention of the tackel, even if there is no contact, then is it a dive or not. in cases such as the Arsenal/Chelsea game at the weekend (Sun 10 Dec) the Pathetic acting by by Drogba and Lehmann is a disgrace and is not needed in the beautiful game. As I was saying I would like to say yes but can you prove it 100% ever time I doubt it. what should happen is referees shauld have more support from Players, Managers, Supports. Their decision is final. It should be the Managers responsibility to stop players from doing this. Stuart Pearce is a credit to the Game for agreeing with the ref after the manchester derby. More managers should be like this.

I think the punishment should be based upon the officials own judgement of what he saw and called only then and there, no time else. You will never be able to know for sure whether a player dived or whether they actually fell. So, if an official thinks it was a dive, I think they should call it immediately instead of later. I mean, why wait until later to make the call?

Yes if there is little doubt that they dived. Whilst it is difficult to see how much contact was made you can get a fair idea whether the player dived. He should get a warning then a ban for further offences. They do it for bad tackles and off the ball incidents so there is no reason why they can't to it for diving.

Yes. But only when there is clear video evidence. For instance Cristiano Ronaldo's dive that earned a PK against Middlesborough a couple of weeks ago was nothing close to a foul. He should be punished for that somehow i.e. game suspension, fine. Diving is ruining the sport and it needs to be stopped. This might be the only way.

Me and my mates were discussing this in the pub after the Chelsea Vs Arsenal game and one of them came up with this brilliant idea, he said that the ref should be given a 3rd card option maybe a pink card, and this card is to be given for blatant diving, what would happen is when this card is given out the player who receives it has to trot over to the sideline and put on a pink skirt or dress instead of his shorts for the rest of the match, watch how quick we would put a stop to all this pantomime crap.
Mind you Ronaldo would probably like it.

Yes it should. You cannot change the opponant teams score or points instead the diver's team should have their points deducted. I also think that throw ins should go back to the old rules, first person there gets the throw. That will liven up some of the rubbish games we have recently seen
