A solid axle is cheaper to work on than a vehicle with cv joints and all that crap. With most vehicles having solid axles in the rear, a rear wheel drive is cheaper to work on. But as far as traction goes, tires have everything to do with that. You can put an all wheel drive with bald tires on an incline in snow and a rear wheel drive vehicle with all weather tires with tread on an incline in snow and both will spin. With car makers finally figuring out the thing called "weight distribution" most newer cars are going to have the weight almost evenly distributed in the front and back, so the statement "more weight is on the front of the vehicle so front wheel drive will have better traction" is simply not a valid statement anymore. So there are just as many advantages as disadvantages for each. Rear wheel drives will tend to have more power due to a solid axle. However if you have a double wishbone suspension (most front wheel drives), you will have a smoother ride than a solid axle. It's all a prefrence thing: power vs comfort.

If you can get it, it's not a compact car, and it's in great shape, rear would be my preference. Cheaper to work on some mechanical problems a car might have in the future, if it's a rear wheel drive.

Don'tknow advantages of front wheel drive. sorryt.

I prefer rear wheel drive. Even in the snow. I like to have a measure of control at both ends of the vehicle. You can't compression brake a front wheel drive down a hill, it will turn around on you.

Front drive is better for operation in slippery conditions, as the weight of the car rests more on the drive wheels.

Rear drive is better for extreme driving, because weight shifts rearward under hard acceleration and changing power does not affect traction on the steering wheels.

Most people have far better use for front-wheel drive.  I once saw a Corvette trying to drive on an icy road; the driver could not even get off idle without spinning his wheels and turning sideways.  He really needed front-wheel drive or AWD that day.
