Neither is better than the other. It is down to the teacher and the student and what principles are consistently applied to the training.

A good practitioner of any one art will be better than a poor practitioner of another, regardless of the martial art practiced.

A for Karate? It contains more knowledge than can be practiced in one lifetime. it is SOOO much more than just for competition. It is an entire holistic lifestyle.

A lot of Karate taught these days is rubbish, taught by egotistical fools who are ignorant of the true depths of Kata, kumite, bunkai or what these practices are for.

If you are a beginner, stick to one art to profficiency, but look around at what other people do. be humble always, always be ready to learn more, disown ego at all costs.

I have been practicing karate for over 20 years, I am still, and always will be a beginner and I love learning new depths and tactics, strategies and truths in my karate.

Whatever art you choose, remember, a kick is just a kick, a punch is just a punch, a choke is just a choke. If you choose karate, be sure you know what you want to gain from your training, is it for competitions? self defence? health? mental discipline?

Find a teacher who can provide these things in your art.

I highly recommend shikon.com and their forum for a huge amount of useful and realistic top class information on a massive range of martial arts.

Read their forum and decide for yourself what 'feels' true to you.

Taekwondo... more self defence, and the sparring is better, karate stop the fight and re-set after each point is scored and you get penalised for making contact. taekwondo is contacs sparring and is continuous for either 2 2min rounds for coloured belts or 3 3min rounds for black belt.

Karate is much better in my opinion.
Taekwondo is just much simpler to learn.

The extra effort for Karate is worth it.

It depends on what you want for each. They both have good things and bad things going for them. I have done both and for me Tae Kwon Do was better for me because of the exercises.
