Hello. I need to run an ethernet cord to a different part of my house. The only problem is the ethernet cord is a tad bit too short. I know quite a bit about splitting cords and running neon lights and such in automobiles. Is it possible to take the ethernet cord that I have now and cut it and another cord and hook these together by splitting the cables inside? Thank you for all your help in advance.

Yes it is possible to splice two Cat 5 wires together, but you can just buy a longer one, because the signal strength will not degrade over a far distance. I've seen cables as long as 150 feet.

it is not wise at all to splice two CAT5 cables together, because of the crosstalk between the wires.. your best bet would be to get a female to female butt connector and hook two cables together, or if you know anything about cabling, you can buy bulk cable and make your own the desired length... if you have a powered device on both ends (router on one end and a PC on the other, you can run the cable up to 100 meters (330 feet) without any degradation of the signal. if you so desire, you can put in a repeater or even a layer 1 hub in the middle to strengthen the signal and everything will be peachy. good luck

I think that it would be possible, however the quality of the cord would be greatly diminished. It will most likely result in a poor quality connection; it is not merely electricity that is being transfered, but data. You may be able to find an adapter that will connect two cords together; go to an electronics store and inquire.

You probably won't see any degradation of signal as long as the length isn't too long.

The double female plugs is easiest, but you can also get what's called a modular plug. This allows you to expose the wires on one end and use a knife (since you probably don't have a punch tool) to insert the 8 wires in their slots. The other end will be female...

Yes, its possible but it could degrade the throughput. You are better off buying a larger cable... yeah yeah I know its expensive at the retail boxes.. but here's a link to really cheap Ethernet cables you can buy online..
