I heard Congress has approved raising minimum wage to $7.00 or $7.15 effective January 15, 2007? Could this be true? I know it has remained the same since 1997!!! How pathetic that our lawmakers have voted THEMSELVES a pay raise every year for 7 or 8 years consistently......that's our government for ya!

First of all, every study on minimum wage has proven that jobs are not effected by the raise. Anyone who says otherwise is not educated on the subject. When you give people a fair wage it gives them more than money, it gives them a bigger stake in their company, raises their families up, creates a more positive work atmosphere and loyalty to their employer, bring's them closer to the American dream. Companies that take care of their employees are successful companies, when a worker doesn't have to worry about medical benefits for his children, the employer will benefit too. The minimum wage is the first priority of the new Democratic congress, it's a sure thing!

It's very likely to be true, although I don't believe any legislation has been introduced yet. It's one of Nancy Pelosi's "100 hours" pledges, and there's probably not much that the GOP can do to stop it. They'll get at it right when the new Congress takes over and the Democrats are in power.
(P.S. I'm not sure Congress has voted themselves payraises ever year. Plus, I WANT my congressman to be paid well. Most of them are required to have two residences, travel all the time, work quite a bit, and be away from their family. I don't want the only people who can afford to run for Congress to do so--people who are independently wealthy, etc.)

I don't think that congress has parsed a law to raise min-um wages but rest assured it will pass very soon after the new congress is sworn in. The whining republicans are so upset they are going to have to stop paying slave wages soon . I feel so sorry for them. If you can not afford to pay a decent wage to people you do not deserve to be in business using people so you can fat cat it on the backs of the poor so hump up and get ready you cheap slave owner republicans

Yes, and woe to those who oppose it. Try the past ten years congress has voted themselves pay raises. We talk about morals on here all the time. In my opinion most of the talk is directed in the wrong directions. What does it say about a company whose CEO can take fifty million dollars out, but a worker must have a second job just to pay his or her bills? Getting rich on the backs of others who can barely afford to eat or heat their homes is morally wrong. Look around, there are many folks in this country living from paycheck to paycheck, an illness or a severe accident and they lose everything. That is the thanks you get today for your work.

I can't wait for minimum wage to go up! it makes the skilled labor that I do worth less. The 7 yrs i have dedicated to learning more and working my way up- sometimes having to stay at work to get more stuff done so I can owrk on a raise and people who make minimum wage are gonna get one for free. I say until the people at McDonalds get my order right everytime when I go through the drive thru then there should be no raises in minimum wage.

not to mention all the companies that will raise their prices because they have to pay more for unskilled labor. Cool so not only will my job be worth less but i will have to pay more to support my family. Thank you Liberals!

It's all a trick.
And the Republicans are going along with the phony Democrats.
Raising the minimum wage will not help anyone.
It will put a bunch of lower wage earners out of work.
Our economy will adjust. Prices on everything will go up. The people drawing minimum wage will still have the same "buying power" they did have. Nothing changes, except everything will cost more.
IT'S A PHONY ISSUE. IT'S A TRICK FOR THE IGNORANT.
Doesn't schools cover this stuff anymore?????
HOW ABOUT MAKING THE MINIMUM WAGE $30.00 AN HOUR?????

mimimum wage shouldn't be any lower then $10 per hour. Right now if you make $11 per hour and are a single parent you can plead poverty. I think the USA has to start taking care of its own people before it helps out other countrys.

No, even with the undeniable fact that it does boost maximum union wages. The grimy little secret's that union contracts index their wages to the minimum, many times so as that union wages go up 3 circumstances as quick as minimum salary. that is why Democrats, who're supported by unions, vote to augment the minimum salary. by doing this, organizations are forced to augment wages for workers some distance more effective than what's honest, and this will boost the prices for us all and in turn we listen extra calls from liberal Democrats to augment the minimum salary lower back. it truly is a cycle that must be stopped or our monetary gadget will finally fall.

Girl I feel ya! I agree. It amazes me that they continue to keep doing that for themselves but make the ppl who work hard on these crappy jobs(for the most part)for such a small amount of money.

It's actually appalling.
