There are brushes sold that you use to clean your dryers filter. Lillian Vernon is one website that sells them.

I keep a little trash can beside my dryer to put the lint into when I pull it out of the trap (I have the kind that you reach into). It's a lot easier to pull it out if your fingers are slightly damp. I clean the trap before each load; once in a while when I'm vacuuming, I also remove the screen and vacuum down in the vent area to get the crud that makes it through/around the trap.

Pull the lint out after each load. After every 6 loads or so run it under HOT water. This will remove the buildup (that can't be seen) from dryer sheets, let air dry and place it back in dryer.

pull the lint off, throw the lint away, put the filter back.

If you decide to wash it, make sure its is completely dry before you put it back.
