Who do you think are the unsung heroes of music and who do you think is just overrated?

This is strictly about the voice and not the music. (there can be more than one!)

my favourite is chris cornell- he sings with true grit and conviction also corey taylor has a really good singing voice.
my least favourite is nadine coyle from girls aloud, christina aguilera, mariah carey (nowadays), i just find that their voices have far too much vibrato (warbling) for my liking

that's only my opinion though- im interested to find out what other people like in a singing voice

What qualifies as a good singing voice? You could say that just being able to sing in tune is good singing! It all depends, some people could be better described as vocalists - i'm thinking David Gedge (The Wedding Present), Terry Hall (Specials/Fun Boy 3), John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten, also Neil Young, and the singers from Mercury Rev and The Flaming Lips. None of these have strong voices, but it doesn't matter because they suit the music. Personally i hate showboating singers - Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and the like - just sing the bloody song, for god's sake! Some people can sing but have relatively uninspiring voices, such as Robbie Williams, Gabrielle, Sade, George Michael, all of whom sound BORED! Personally my favourite singers/vocalists are Bjork, Ian Dury, Ray Davies, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals) and Bowie.

Best voice - Tarja Turunen. She is a heavy metal singer but her voice is very classical and operatic. I think she has one of the best voices in music. She could sing almost anything perfectly.

Worst voice - Actually a lot of singers have very poor voices. Often they play to their strengths and thus we do not notice that they can't sing that well. For example Lemmy from Motorhead has a good voice for rock music but he would not work well as a mainstream singer. I think this is true of a lot of voical artists.

Lots of singers have good voices, and lots of them have bad voices.

I agree with you, I LOVE Corey Taylor's and Axl Rose's voices <33

And I also like Andrew McMahon from Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin's voice.

As For voices I don't like, there's Tyson Ritter from All-American Rejects (they're called REJECTS for a reason!!) And The lead singers from Taking Back Sunday and Fall Out Boy ( I don't know their names).

ksmart is right, except I've just been to a GNR concert and Axl's voice sounds the same. So I would say the best- Axl Rose and the worst is All American Rejects or Panic! At the disco. Or stupid crap bands like those.

I honestly think almost everyone now is totally overrated...with all the digital mixings and recordings we can do, modern singers take advantage of that and we can't ever hear their real voices.

The heroes of music are the ones who sing to glorify God - the one who gave them their voices in the first place.

I don't know about the best; too may to choose from, but Bono has the most overrated, pompous sounding voice I can think of.

Robert Plant has always had the best voice wether he is singing rock, blues, love songs, it doesn't matter his gentle yet intense vocals can do it all, and he still kicks butt!
