I think the whole issue of time off in the USA needs to be looked at. If you are lucky you get two weeks vacation. I read an article that made a convincing argument for three - one week for yourself, one for family and one for odd days - you know, staying in for the plumber, that sort of thing. Certainly, a case could easily be made for another week (five days) in sick leave, carried forward for as long as employment lasts. That would make four weeks which, I suggest, large corporations could afford quite easily if they cut back on fat-cat executive pay. It might be more difficult for smaller employers. I work for a CPA and, in addition to the owner, there is one other full-time employee and one part-timer during tax season. If I am not there to do my job because I am sick, it either puts the burden on the other two or it waits till I get back.

There is no easy answer, but I would suggest that a minimum of three weeks vacation and sick leave would actually benefit the economy. It goes to the principle of Henry Ford's efficiency wages. Look after your employees and they will be more productive.

I take Poot's point about the documentation. In the UK, you have to produce a Doctor's note after the third day of absence. This allows for a day off with a tummy bug or the like but absences of three days or more are combined with any absence in the succeeding eight weeks, to inhibit malingering. It's actually quite a neat system if you monitor it properly.

Depends on the position. I think that if the sick time gets in the way of doing the job it's too much.

I am very strongly opinioned that any paid sick day should be accompanied by documentation from a medical professional to be accepted.

Many employers are giving employees 14 days (as an example) which they could use as a sick day or vacation time or just mental health time. That way employees are responsible for the most efficient use of their time. Generally, itis one week for each year of employment, with gradual increases as you hit 5 years or more with the same employer

None if the company lumps sick and vacation time together as 'personal time'.
