Why is it only effected by my fingers and not by paper pencils or other things? Is it heat or texture sensitive?

Not how you think. They work by heat, not pressure. It's a matrix of tiny thermistors (heat sensors) and software that figures out which way you're moving your finger and moves the cursor that way. If you're holding a hot cup of coffee like I usually am, just getting a hand near it will move the cursor.

Touch Pads are Heat Sensitive. Laptops used to ship with a groovy little program that turned your touch pad into a mood ring (which also works off of body temperature). The disadvantage of this is if your hands are cold, your touch pad isn't going to work as well.

touch pads are comprised of thousands of thermal sensors which detect the heat coming from your finger on the pad.
