I think I remember playing this when I was in 5th Grade. We called it something different, but oh well. The best way to win was to use vibrantly designed pencils made of chinese wood, or red wood. The trick was applying loads of pressure towards the bottom of your pencil, and then releasing with a clean follow through. By keeping your two hands together closer, you decrease the length of the pencil you are applying pressure on, which prevents your own pencil from breaking.

Now, you have to be sure that the other person is not "bracing". We always made that illegal. Check the capilaries on his finger tips to make sure. If they are white, he's bracing. If they are still his own skin color, then you're fine.

Of course, you could cheat and chop his pencil. Then run away laughing! (Been there, done that)

What I used to do was rip off my eraser and flatten the metal to chip the other pencil.
