It depends on if you can repeat digits. Without repeating 720, with repeating 1000. This is if 0 can be a digit
but then u could end up with numbers like 054, which is the same as 54. You'd have to subtract them out. It depends on the exact problem

You are getting widely different answers because you didn't say whether you mean possible combinations of the SAME three digits (in which case there are six possible combinations), or whether you mean possible combinations of 3 digit numbers taken from the ten digits we normally use for counting (in which case there are 1000), or something else, in which case -- we can't guess!

_ _ _ each space has a digit in it, if we take out all numbers starting with 0 then there are 9 possibilities for the first digit and 10 for the rest so 9x10x10=900 possibilities.

You did not include the notation! Decimal, octal,or hexadecimal.
There is a universe of difference between decimal 999 and hexadecimal FFF, both are three digit numbers.

if there are 3 digits INCLUDING 0s as a number, then there are 1,000 because of 000 as a combo, 001 002 003 etc. With no 000s then there are 999

I think from 000 to 999, that makes a total of 1000 possibilities. Although the question it's not so clear.
