My emergency kit has:

4 warning triangles -- those reflective things that warn traffic I am stopped and to go around me instead of hitting me.

a package of ten 8-10 hour Cyalume sticks in different colors, and some 12 hour ones in White or Blue. (these can double for the triangles if I need a longer warning area for traffic.)

Battery jumper: one of those compact batteries that towing companies carry around. You plug it in to recharge it, and it's great when there isn't another car to help you jump your car.

Roll of Duct Tape

Roll of RED duct tape

20-ft. Battery jumping cables (just in case)

Roll of paper towels

Cannister of Babywipes

Sunscreen

Strong Flashlight -- check the batteries from time to time.

Can of Fix-a-Flat foam

mid-weight jacket & knit cap

Spare socks, underwear

Jack & spare tire

Thermal blanket -- one of those cheap ones

emergency poncho

Umbrella

Granola Bars

Some water in bottles

-------------------------
When I lived in Michigan, I also had:
#10 can

Waterproof Matches and a can of sterno (so I could get snow and melt it for water.)

several chocolate bars in a reclosable bag

small bag of clay-type kitty litter (for traction)

Specialty emergency kit - my brother bought it for me one Christmas. It is a zippered case that holds everything from jumper cables to flashlight, blanket, ice scraper, tire pressure gauge, fix-a-flat and such. I also carry water, rag towels, tissues, reflective emergency triangles, coins for a phone.

Oh yeah, and stuff from the manufacturer - donut spare tire and hoist for fixing the flat.
