it doesn't. cold water will not reach boiling temperature faster than water that is warm, all other conditions being equal. simple physics.

I can't figure any reason for the cold water to boil faster. The stove pushes heat into the water at a fairly constant rate. First the water has to reach boiling temperature, then actually boil, both need heat taken in. For cold water, reaching boiling temperature takes longer.

no, it doesn't. I believe they are getting confused with the idea that hot water freezes faster than cold water.

This freezing idea, however, is true only under very special circumstances. You can read more about it here

As for the boiling, for a liquid there is a certain temperature that is required for something to boil, as you probably know. This means that the mass of liquid must reach and exceed it. In order to do so, sufficient energy must be put in the system. Thus, the net energy required with cold water will be higher than hot.

Neither cold water nor warm water boil. In order to boil, water must be HOT.

Warm water will become hot water faster than cold water. Your gf and her mother are either testing your gullibility, or are very thick. If I were you, I'd hope and pray for the former, cos if it's the latter, you are going to be here a lot, and this is a very stupid Q.

I would say you can try a simple experiment. Go to the kitchen with them and measure the boiling time for various temperatures of water. I think this is the only way to resolve the issue. Why would they believe anyone here if they do not believe you?

no because, warm water is hotter than cold, and therefore doesn't have to be heated as long to reach 212 degrees.
