Well, according to some, it was from Kashan, Iran:
Eight centuries before Christ, men say, the city of Kashan was already here. Much as it is now, its summer heat, its collected rain water and the reservoir at Fin, its melons and figs, its neighbouring eighteen villages, were described in the 14th century. According to Odoric of Pordenone (132O), this was the city from which came the Three Wise Men; and from here these Kings got to Jerusalem, with God's help, in thirteen days. A fine royal city, he says, rich in bread, wine and everything, though ravaged by the Tartars.

(Marzieh Gail, Dawn Over Mount Hira, p. 72)

And years ago, a friend who was studying Zoroastrianism, said he found a story/prophecy that when His followers asked Zoroaster (Zarathustra) when He would return, He said "Look for a star in the west. Follow it and you will find me cradled in straw."

Bethlehem is west of Kashan..... :-)

The historical texts state from the west, because they saw the star in the east to get to Jerusalem. The belief is that there could have been more than three kings or wise men, but three gifts were given.

As to where, in modern day terms, Turkey, Ethiopia, and other countries around the Mediterranean region, most likely African in nature.

from Parthia, quote from a church newsletter: "The magi were powerful members of one of the two assemblies which elected Parthian monarchs and wielded great influence within the empire. One assembly was composed of members of the royal family (the Arsacids), and the other consisted of the priests (the Magi) and influential Parthians of non-royal blood (the Wise Men). The Magi and Wise Men were jointly known as the Megistanes. The Greek word translated "wise men" is "magian" literally meaning "Persian astronomer or priest". Parthia had long governed all Persian territory at the time of Christ, and the Wise Men cited in the Bible were clearly members of the Megistanes - very high Parthian officials"

They were from somewhere in the orient. THere is very little known about them, as the accounts are very vauge. They were also quite aways from Jeruselum. It actually took them about 2 years to arrive,. They went to Herrod (the King) looking for Jesus, they called him the king. This made Herrod mad and he ordered all babies two and under to be killed. So they were not actually there at the time of the birth.

You mean the three wisemen? from the Christmas carol "We three kings of Orient are..."
They are the three kings/magi/wise men who saw the star announcing the birth of Jesus, and followed the star's light to Bethlehem. I don't recall if the Bible mentions exactly where they are from, but it was from somewhere in the East.

the number three is just tradition. there might have been many more. The "three" came from the three gifts listed in the gospels: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

where they came from?

the bible tells us they are from "the east"
so presumably the Iran / Iraq area.
There is speculation that one could have come from even further east (sounds good if you think that they were studying stars and the one furthest east would have been watching the star and as he travelled it was passed on by word of mouth that he was, and the other guys joined him - one from Iran area, one from Iraq) Of course those countries weren't named that back then.
