OK, one thing is not liking it --- you don't like it, that's fine, don't watch it.
But there's people who rant against it! There's even blogs, websites and articles against it, as if it were a moral issue!

That is an interesting question. Most of the main stream sports media has it in for soccer. I think they act that way so has not to lose reader/listeners/viewers. But then if you look at the issue closely you will see that Soccer has more fans in the US than they would have you believe. Look at the facts. Soccer constantly pulls higher TV ratings than hockey. It is the most popular participation sport in the US. The 94 men's would cup was the most heavily attended world cup in history and it was not all fans from overseas either. And lets not even talk about what a huge success the 99 Women world cup was. To get at the root of your question which is why some Americans are so anti-Soccer it is because they say the Soccer does not have enough "action". What that means is that it is not violent enough which is why soccer players often have the heterosexuality questioned because they are not pounding on each other like some wild apes.

I agree, some American commentators and blog-heads go over the top with their dislike of soccer.

It may be a streak of anti-internationalism i.e. they wash their hands of any sport in which the U.S. does not dominate in international play. It may also have to do with the fact that there aren't enough goals scored for their taste & too many games end in a tie (which doesn't go over well with the winning-is-everything crowd.) They also may not like a sport where the athletes don't have the body frames of wild buffalo. Also also, they might get the heebie-jeebies when they see two guys "embrace" after a goal.

Who knows. :) I'm an American & I love soccer AND a lot of other sports. Go fig.

Americans have a short attention span so if scoring is not happening every five seconds then they are lost. They just can't sit and watch beauty unold. They can't understand what its like to have a sport where drugs doesn't really help you. Not to mention America has no style of football. Thier brand is being over-coached.

It does seem strange how strong the feelings are towards soccer. I think that the entire world saying it is a great sport, while looking down on football, kind of pisses poeple off.

The only time that I'm against it is when someone (usually a Brit) starts ripping on American football.

All Americans see soccer as the pussy sport. They just sucked at the game, so called it the sport of pansies.

Because they think it is pointless and boring to watch, which it isn't.
