It is possible his gill is damaged by being out of the water for too long, did he ever jump out. Look for a parasite inside the gill, you can sometimes see the tail end sticking out of the gill. I have seen some Oscars in relaxed states only breathing out of one gill before with no damage. They usually resume normal breathing. Do a water change to rule out any water conditions that could be destroying the gill filaments. As long as Oscar looks healthy he should be ok.

Does he apear to have an injury to his gill? Redness, white fuzzy stuff, rips or tears, etc?

What are the water conditions and tank size? Oscars need 60+ gallons of water per fish, a varied diet, and clean water (weekly water changes). They are surprisingly susceptible to dirty water.

Ensure the tank is big enough and the water is clean. If you notice damage/irritation to the gill, it may be bacterial, treat with Maracyn-2.
