Ok, I need an idea was to what (in my household) can I take to work for a white elephant gift exchange. Here's how we do it...everyone that wants to participate brings in a wrapped gift and then everyone gets a gift at the beginning of the day and opens it to display at their desk. By 3:00 whichever gift is in your posession is then yours. I started working at this employer in January so I've never done this..I asked an employee that I work with what to bring and she tells me about "the tennis shoe". Of course, I have to ask "What tennis shoe?" Evedently there is this old tennis shoe (just one) that currulates each year and whoever gets it, decorates it a little more and brings it back the next year. So my question to everyone is...what should I wrap up to take in? Thank you for your suggestions.

a long handled shoe horn. or... if you want to bring something more practical, a roll of angel soft toilet paper. i ended up with that myself one year with a group of friends that did the same thing.

A few years ago at work we did this and one person gave two slimjim sausages (OK they were real thin but they were each 3 feet long). These were so popular that they kept getting passed around. (OK we are more than 1/2 guys.) But you might give something lots would like. If not slimjims, then a six pack of twinkies, or moon pies, or a small box of slim chocolate mints. You get out of the exercise a little bit of a winner because you gave a gift that was a little desirable, and you have a better Idea what to do next year. Unless you want to find one 4 inch, sequined, spike, high heel on which you tie colored condums for decoration. (save the other heel for next year).

I happen to be the originator and administrator of the 5th Annual White Elephant Gift Exchange at my office and here are some of the classics:

A vinyl album of christmas songs from like 1972 (completely useless)

A bright orange clay urn in which a Native American woman pouring water is hand-painted on the side

Just the hood from a coat

A Fabio romance VHS video

A cowboy boot shaped coffee cup

A flame-singed oven mitt with matching stained dish towel

A horrible sea shell lamp

Plastic, fake poo

These are just a sampling of the utter crap that has been brought in by our employees! What is scary is trying to figure out who brought what in!!! I really go all out and usually go to Goodwill and try to find something really "special" to bring in. The funnier the better!

A Chia Pet would be a good one. Last year I got a "magic bank" where you put a coin in the holder and after a few seconds, a hand would reach out of the box and snatch the coin.

I have also received a clock that has a bunch of birds on it. For each hour, the "chime" is the sound of that hour's bird.

You could also give a "Big Mouth Billy Bass". That's the fish on the plaque that sings "Take Me To The River". It's a riot, but not something you would buy for yourself.

Anything you dont use, I bet you have a basement full of things you could give away. A candle holder you dont use, a vase from a room your redecorated 2 years ago, but didnt want to get rid of.
White elephant usually goes off the "one person's trash is another person's treasure" mentality, so you dont have to give your new candle sticks to make yourself look good, no one will know they were yours anyway. Its just a cheap and usually fun way to do a gift exchange. Just be sure to go into it with good humor.

Folks always assume that the white elephant is something that nobody would really want. But the truth is, you'll do right by getting something really cool and everybody will wish they had it. I would definitely go for gourmet chocolates, a new dvd like "Pirates", a lovely christmas decoration, etc . . .

A fruitcake!!

Well, actually, take any little knickknack that's been sitting on the shelf for ages, and you have no idea where you got it from. Ceramic clowns, anything from the '80s, and the family fruitcake are great ideas :)

One year someone gave a candle that you light with money inside. No one dared light it to find out how much was inside, but everyone wanted that darn candle.
